DAY 5 – Westport to Hanmer Springs
We were so excited to see sunshine this morning as the dawn broke over the crashing waves. Only a few sprinkles as we rode through to Reefton and spent some time with the locals at the gold-miners historical camp. Three bearded miners gave a very nice donation along with a warm welcoming cup of billy tea. We have been catching the eye of tourists and locals alike as they often stop to chat and find out what on earth we are up to! We have campervan drivers stop to tell us they have passed us a few times – and other bike riders asking about the concept of long-distance scooter riding.
After a quick fuel stop at Springs Junction and a brief lunch stop at Maruia Springs we continued our great pace as we travelled in the sunshine to Hanmer Springs and a relaxing soak at the Thermal Hot Pools.
The crew is in great spirits and having lots of fun together as we celebrated the close-to-end game by going out for dinner. The photo and video sessions we have before bedtime are met with lots of laughter and story-telling and it’s quite difficult to describe the level of camaraderie one can achieve during a challenge such as this.
Photos and video to follow…. we are trying to get to bed earlier to get more out of the next day!
