DAY 4 – Franz Joseph to Westport
An early planned start was delayed by Jason misplacing the scooter key. A thorough search of the house proved unfruitful so off with the front cover in order to hot-wire Jason’s scoot.
Another long rainy day with fresh overnight snow as we left Franz Joseph on the hills around us. The low cloud and green scenery is so typical of the West Coast as we wound our way through the rain forests for a quick offroad excursion just outside of Ross (my first school, by the way).
Simon’s scooter expired – this time for the last time. He was very upset and spent more time in the truck with Bryan (where it’s nice and dry – LIGHTWEIGHT!) We are now down to five with two bikes on the trailer.
CRASH ALERT!!!!! So can you guess who came off their bike in front of a line of traffic in the wet? You’re right – the frst crash award goes to CRASH himself – JASON!
Caught up with Jason’s dad, Dion just after that for a quick visit to Lake Mahinapua where Shaun tested the depth of the lake while still riding.
A great lunch at a fantastic little bakery in Hokitika included a tour of the premises.
On through Greymouth to Punakaiki for a half hour break and a tour of the pancake rocks & blow holes – and fortunately the rain held off for most of the time.
We finished a great run through the West Coast and arrived at our wonderful holiday home in Tauranga Bay with a magic view to have dinner (thanks Adrienne) and work on the bikes a little more before bed. Â In the process, Jason found his scooter key in his bathroom bag – DOH!

Sorry to hear Simon’s scooter expired and can imagine his disappointment.
I had a few phone calls from friends who saw you heading up through Barrytown and into Punakaiki so others are watching out for you.
Stay safe and Jase watch out for slippery grass
Take it easy hun. You’re all on the home stretch!I hope the remaining scooters can hang in there.
