DAY 2 – Cromwell to Lake Hawea via Queenstown
The boys were up early and had the dead scooters stripped down to the bare essentials, cleaning mud and water from fuel tanks, air cleaners and carbs.
By 10.00am it was still looking like it would only be 4 scooters heading out. Once again Adrienne came through, sorting out a full cooked breakfast for the crew. It obviously worked as by 11.00 we were sorted and on the road with a full crew of 6! Well done Simon, Clemmy and Shaun, good effort.
Stopped by the AJ Hackett bungy jump in the Kawarau gorge but no one was keen. The late start meant we had to get a move on to complete the route planned. Despite dire rain warnings, Queenstown put on a craker day and we all headed up the gondola for a bit of Luge action.
Apparently there was a sign with a number of Luge rules, but obviously no one paid attention. We managed to get our three runs in without getting kicked out despite multiple contacts, excursions onto the grass and me manging to flip the luge completely and ruining my Mitre 10 waterproof trousers.
From Queenstown, it was north through the amazingly picturesque town of Arrowtown before heading for the crown range. This steep climb up the ranges was easier than expected (dreaded) and the views at the summit made the effort all worth it. From here, the boys made the most of the long descent and had the scooters off the dial (which only go up to 60km/h).
A quick cold one at the Cadrona Hotel before off on t0 the second-to-last leg. Simon seemed to have picked up cruise control with his scooter stuck on full throttle and 10km down the valley he was out of gas. After a re-fuel, there was no action and a quick examination revealed half the internals of his carburetta were waving around in the breeze. His scooter was trailered and once again Simon had to finish on the back-up scooter -- Lightweight!
Another late day home and as we planned an early morning start for our biggest day to come, repairs needed to be completed before bed. This involved all the crew mucking in to get the work done by the light of the Landcruiser headlights. Another big effort by the team, delicously fed by the always-incredible Adrienne.

haha – looks like fun!!
